‘If a picture paints a thousand words, then why can’t I paint you?’ Asked Bread’s David Gates, on Roger Whittaker’s 1971 TV programme, in a song. I think he was alluding to the fact that he believed that the beauty of a particular person he fancied could not be summed up in only a thousand words, rather than it being an admission of his being a below-average artist. It’s still a rubbish lyric though. ‘Lush’. ‘Stunning’. ‘Phwoarr’. These describe a looker in only one word. Sometimes less is more, David. Bearing that in mind, check these out.
